動詞?を起源とする、名詞?、形容詞?、副詞?など他の品詞?の働きをする。
to 不定詞 †
動詞?の原形の前に前置詞? "to" を付けて使用する。
名詞的用法 †
主語として †
- English is easy.
- To study English is easy.
目的語として †
- I like English.
- I like to study English.
- in order to
- He worked hard in order to succeed.
- so as to
- He worked hard so as to succeed.
補語として †
- He is a teacher.
- My dream is to be a teacher.
副詞的用法 †
副詞的用法の不定詞は、意味がいろいろあり過ぎる。
動詞の修飾語として †
～するために～した。
- I went to the store to buy some sweets.
- I came here to learn dance.
形容詞の修飾語として †
～して～した（感情を表す形容詞や過去分詞）
- I was surprised to hear the news.
- I was glad [happy] to hear the news.
結果を表す †
- awoke[woke up] to find ～
- 目覚めてみると ～ と解った
- I awoke [woke up] to find myself on the bed.
- grew up to be ～
- 成長して ～ になった
- He grew up to be a lawyer.
- lived to be ～
- ～ 歳まで生きた。
- She lived to be ninety-four.
- 動詞の過去形 + never to + 動詞の原形
- ・・・して二度と～しなかった。
- He left here never to return.
- 動詞の過去形 + only to + 動詞の原形
- ・・・したが、結局～に終わった。
- He studied hard only to fail.
副詞の修飾語として †

形容詞的用法 †
名詞?・代名詞?の直後に置かれて、to 不定詞で修飾。
不定詞に修飾される語 †
- が不定詞の意味上の目的語となる場合
- I want something to eat.
- I have time to play tennis.
不定詞の次に前置詞を必要とする場合 †
- He live in a house.
- He has no house to live in.
- He sit on a chair.
- He has no chair to sit on.
- He play with a friends.
- He has no friends to play with.
- He talk with a friends.
- He has no friends to talk with.
- He write with a pencil.
- He has no pencil to write with.
- He buy the book with money.
- He has no money to buy the book with.

予定、義務、可能、運命、意図・目的
疑問詞? + to 不定詞 †
疑問詞?（目的語?）の前の動詞?はknow, learnが多い。
- I don't know where to go.
- I learned how to make a cake.
- I don't know what to do.
- She didn't know which to select.
- Please tell me when to go there.
否定 †
- in order to, so as toの場合
- in order not to
- so as not to

動詞の原形のみで使用する。
原形不定詞をとる形は次の３つ。
